I Don't Believe
The struggle between reason and emotion, faith and logic.
Concept
The ideas started from the question of whether a funeral is necessary after a person's passing. "I Don't Believe" is a theme that explores logic and faith. It advances the exploration of the inner world through the opposing concepts of reason and emotion. The concept is to find the true answer through the process of navigating these two contradictory ideas, allowing the reasoning mind and the emotionally inclined heart to move in the same direction.
Background
I come from an environment filled with various religious beliefs. Visiting temples to pray for good fortune and reading mythological epics for inspiration are things I often do. However, when asked whether I believe in religion, my answer is uncertain. Religion appeals to my emotional side, telling stories from different perspectives through mythological epics. Yet, the institutional education I received taught me to prove things through a logical side. Numbers, data, and evidence—these concepts, instilled by modern education, stand in stark contrast to faith. Evidence and numbers cannot prove what faith is.
However, despite believing that I deny faith, I still tend to turn to it in difficult times. For example, before every flight, I visit a specific temple to pray for safety. Upon returning home, I visit the temple again to announce my safe return. This contradictory mindset makes me feel that my mind and heart generate opposing thoughts — reason and emotion.
